Opens Jul 1 2024 12:00 AM (AEST)
Deadline Sep 1 2024 11:59 PM (AEST)
Up to $10,000 (AUD)
Description

Background

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) Research and Education Foundation was established by the RANZCP Board in 2006 to accept donations for research, leadership and training in psychiatry undertaken by Fellows, trainees and affiliates in Australia and New Zealand. In recognition that knowledge of research theory and methods is an essential skill in psychiatry, the RANZCP Foundation Early Research Career Grant (formerly known as the Early Research Career Grant and the Research and Education Foundation Grant) is designed to encourage applicants to undertake good innovative research in psychiatry and be a springboard to enhance the applicants’ research career.

Eligibility

Fellows or Affiliates of the RANZCP may apply only. The applicant must:

Be considered new to research, which generally includes those who have either not received any research funding individually themselves, or a minimal amount (less than A$10,000), or have only previously undertaken research as part of a team rather than being the lead researcher.

Be an Affiliate or Fellow who will conduct the research in Australia or New Zealand.

Those not eligible for this award such as RANZCP Trainees are encouraged to apply for the Beverley Raphael New Investigator Grant.

Form of Award

Amount payable is A$10,000.00 (GST inclusive) to provide an additional research opportunity for Fellows of the RANZCP. If the budget to undertake research exceeds the grant amount, applications will still be accepted, but with the Committee granting the A$10,000.00 (GST inclusive) as a maximum contribution.

Frequency

The grant is dependent on funds to the Foundation and may not be sustainable to be offered every year. The grant will also be reviewed following this application process to determine its suitability. If there are no suitable applicants in 2024, the grant will not be awarded.

Conditions of the Grant

The grant will be awarded on the basis of the researcher’s expected contribution to psychiatry in Australia and/or New Zealand.

The grant recipient will be chosen on the basis of the online application, CV and research proposal which will include a detailed brief on what the applicant is aiming to achieve by conducting this research.

Criteria

The research application must include the following:

A curriculum vitae.

At least one referee’s report (work performed partly in Australia/New Zealand and partly elsewhere is acceptable).

Documentation of the analysis tool/s and method of dissemination of findings. It is expected that the applicant has personally planned and designed the study and will be actively leading and can articulate as to how they will participate in the data acquisition or collection and data analysis. This could include applying for data access, chart reviews and development of analysis plan. Inclusion of expert statistical advice is acceptable as part of the project plan.

Details of the project budget including all proposed spending (expenses related to patient travel and small incentives for involvement and funding for research assistants are acceptable, however, not the supply of computer equipment).

Funding will not be considered for the preparation (i.e. publishing, printing or binding) of dissertation/thesis. Funding the applicant’s salary will not be included. Funding will not be granted for open access publishing or computer equipment.

In the event that the budget for the project is greater than the amount provided by the Foundation Early Research Career Grant the applicant must provide a letter from their sponsor advising that the funding shortfall will be met from other sources and that letter must be provided with the application.

Disclosure of previous individual research funding and/or application in the 2024 Beverley Raphael New Investigator Grant round (only one grant will be awarded if deemed successfully suitable for both grants).

Funding will not be provided for audits or systematic reviews.

If the award is not claimed after 5 years, the grant will not be awarded.

Failure to provide two consecutive years of an annual progress report will result in no further funding awarded.

Please note:

The Committee also reserve the right to reject or reconsider aspects of applications due to excessive funding requests or inappropriate budget item requests if the items or funding cannot be justified. The Early Research Career Grant is merit-based. As such, the Committee is not obligated to distribute the full available funding and may provide grant funding under the total distributable amount.

Funding will not be granted for attendance at conferences. However, an additional amount may be made available subsequent to the completion of the recipient’s research project. This is to encourage presentation of the results at a scientific meeting, either the annual RANZCP Congress or the annual meeting of the Society for Mental Health Research. A grant of up to A$1000 (GST Inclusive) will be available on a competitive basis to assist with conference registration and travel expenses. The researcher will be required to provide a copy of their submitted abstract for the relevant meeting.

Application Process

Applications will be blinded for assessment after any Conflicts-of-Interest have been noted and addressed appropriately.

Selection Process

Applications will be reviewed, shortlisted and confirmed by the RANZCP Committee for Research at a face-to face meeting. Successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified in writing shortly after that date.
