Description

Purpose

The RANZCP Foundation Catalyst Grants aim to give psychiatrist researchers access to small scale funds which will assist them to prepare a pilot or proof of concept for a future study.

Functioning as a starting point, the Catalyst Grants provide a signal of merit and endorsement from the RANZCP Foundation and aim to assist researchers to take their projects and proposals beyond an idea, to the point of readiness to apply for larger funding. 

There are no restrictions placed on the permitted uses of a RANZCP Foundation Catalyst Grant up to the A$5,000 maximum grant limit. Examples of how funding could be used include dedicated research equipment, statistical analysis software, participant reimbursement, and/or ethics or governance costs. 

The RANZCP Foundation Catalyst Grants are available to researchers with all levels of experience or career stages, and those with limited or little research experience are encouraged to apply.

The Catalyst grant is intended to enable future research in Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, or a neighbouring region.

Award Sponsor

Catalyst Grants are supported by donations to the RANZCP Foundation.

Form of the Award

Two grants of up to A$5,000 each annually (GST inclusive).

Eligibility

  • RANZCP Fellows and affiliate members.
  • The grant may be awarded to one person or shared by a team containing at least one RANZCP Fellow or Affiliate member.
  • Previous recipients, including members of research teams, of the grant are eligible to apply for further funding. 
  • Applicants must have not received more than A$10,000 in previous research funding for the research topic that is the subject of this grant application.
  • RANZCP members who work part-time, are on or are returning from parental leave, or undertaking another form of leave including carers/family leave are eligible to apply. 

Special conditions

Recipients are required to submit an abstract on their funded research at a RANZCP scientific conference, or to a RANZCP journal.

Cultural safety

We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the First Nations and the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands and waters now known as Australia, and Māori as tangata whenua in Aotearoa, also known as New Zealand. 

The RANZCP Foundation is interested in hearing from applicants whose projects prioritize cultural safety and the mental health and wellbeing of First Nations people, and members who identify as Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, or Māori or Pasifika are encouraged to apply.

Lived experience

The RANZCP commits to improving the delivery of psychiatric care and mental health services by partnering with people with lived experience. Including, supporting psychiatrists to work in partnership with people with lived experience so they can have genuine input in research, planning, monitoring, and implementation of treatment and care.

Checklist to apply

You will need the following documentation to complete your application.

  • Curriculum vitae.
  • At least one referee’s report.
  • Evidence of approval from a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) or evidence that approval has been submitted.
  • Documentation of the analysis tool/s and method of dissemination of findings.
  • Detailed project budget.
  • Disclosure of previous research funding and/or current applications.

Selection criteria

Applications are assessed based on the following:

  • Scientific quality and feasibility.
  • Capacity and capability of the proposal to support the mental health and wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities.
  • Role of applicant, applicant quality and experience, and research environment.
  • Cultural safety.
  • Any other criteria determined by the RANZCP Foundation Committee or the RANZCP Committee for Research.

Selection process

Applications will be assessed by the Committee for Research (CFR), who will provide a recommendation to the RANZCP Foundation Committee for any award of grant funding. 

The CFR will seek the advice from members of Te Kaunihera or the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health Committee to assist assess submissions or research protocols that are designed to engage or benefit these populations and communities. 

The RANZCP reserves the right to consult with other College committees and expert groups to assist in its decision-making; make no award of grant funding where, in its opinion, no suitable applications are received; and where possible, provide feedback and advice to unsuccessful applicants.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application, regardless of the outcome.

All applicants are advised that the RANZCP Foundation Catalyst Grants are not a guarantee of future funding from either the Foundation or any other external funders.
