Purpose
The RANZCP’s Faculty of Psychotherapy established the RANZCP Psychotherapy Research Award in 2009, to encourage research in psychotherapy amongst psychiatry trainees and Fellows in Australia and New Zealand.
Form of the Award
The Award comprises an award certificate and provision of funding (in line with the research project budget) for the proposed research, to a maximum of AUD$10,000. The Award will be formally conferred at the College Ceremony during RANZCP’s Annual Congress.
The Award is made available annually.
Eligibility
The Award is open to psychiatry trainees, recent Fellows within five years of admission to Fellowship, or Fellows undertaking RANZCP Advanced Training in the Psychotherapies.
The Award may be made to one person, a team, or multiple applicants. If there are no suitable applicants, the Award will not be made in that year. Previous recipients of the Award will not be eligible to receive the Award on a further occasion.
Selection process
The RANZCP will convene a selection panel for the purposes of assessing all applications. The Selection Panel shall consist of the Chair and one other member of the Faculty of Psychotherapy, and the Chair of the Committee for Research.
In making a recommendation the Selection Panel will consider the research protocol submitted, and the addition to the body of knowledge in psychotherapy following the completion of the applicant’s research.
Selection criteria
Applications are assessed based on the following:
- Scientific merit
- Feasibility
- Significance
- Role of applicant, applicant quality and experience, and research environment
- Any other criteria determined by the RANZCP Faculty of Psychotherapy
Cultural safety
We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the First Nations and the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands and waters now known as Australia, and Māori as tangata whenua in Aotearoa, also known as New Zealand. The RANZCP is interested in hearing from applicants whose projects prioritize cultural safety and the mental health and wellbeing of First Nations people, and members who identify as Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, or Māori or Pasifika are encouraged to apply.
Lived experience
The RANZCP commits to improving the delivery of psychiatric care and mental health services by partnering with people with lived experience. This includes supporting psychiatrists to work in partnership with people with lived experience so they can have genuine input in research, planning, monitoring, and implementation of treatment and care.
Other information
The recipient should submit a report at the completion of the research that is supported by the Award. It is envisaged that the research will also be presented for publication in either the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry or Australasian Psychiatry.
